Super Kodak Six-20
(1938-1944) The Super Kodak Six-20 was the first camera with automatic exposure, using a selenium light meter linked to the aperture control. Its design featured a folding clam-shell, crank winding, and a coupled rangefinder. Despite its innovative features, it was expensive ($225, or $4500 in 2023) and had reliability issues, earning the nickname "the boomerang" for frequent returns for repairs. It was discontinued in 1944, with an estimated production of 714-725 units.
A collector’s note: I’ve noticed this camera is easy to find on Ebay because of the high asking price, usually in the $1000+ range. It’s rare but they don’t move as quick. I luckily found one for $400 on Ebay that’s visually in great condition, but needs repair.
